Voodoo - Vodou - Vodun
 | General background:
Vodun (a.k.a. Vodoun, Voudou, Voodoo, Sevi Lwa) is commonly called Voodoo by the public. The name is traceable to an African word for "spirit". Vodun's can be directly traced to the West African Yoruba people who lived in 18th and 19th century Dahomey. Its roots may go back 6,000 years in Africa. That country occupied parts of today's Togo, Benin and Nigeria. Slaves brought their religion with them when they were forcibly shipped to Haiti and other islands in the West Indies.

Vodoun is the heritage of the ancient africans nations that were exiled in the new world. Its ways have been born throughout the darkest times by our forefathers in order to teach us how to live today and tomorrow.
Vodoun is more than one thing, it is medecine, justice, police, it is art, dance, music as well as religious ritual. It is the common ground upon which we, the children of the african new world diaspora, stand together.

At the outset, it must be stated that, in spite of the grievous oversight by many Western historians, & scholars etc., in mistakenly crediting Vodoun's development to Haiti, Vodoun is first, foremost and at its cosmological core, an ancestral religion that some anthropologists have dated to be at least 10,000 years old.
All of the Vodoun practiced in the New World have their ancestral and spiritual roots in Dahomey, including Haitian Vodou, (which [Haiti] has only been an independant republic since 1804). Dahomean Vodoun is the oldest of these Vodoun religions, and as it is today, was a fully developed and complex system of ritual, theology and worhsip long before it arrived in the New World.
