The Mystery of the Taj Mahal
This BBC documentary tells the story of one of the world's most beautiful and recognizable structures, the Taj Mahal. Built by Shah Jahan, Muslim ruler of the wealthy and sophisticated Mughal Empire in India, the mausoleum was dedicated to his favorite wife and constant companion, Arjumand Banu Begum. Shah Jahan called her "Mumtaz Mahal," meaning "ornament of the palace," and the name Taj Mahal comes from this term of endearment for her. The construction of the Taj Mahal took from 1632 to 1654. A council of architects from India, Persia, and Turkey designed it; 20,000 workers labored daily for 22 years to build it. It is a precise visual representation of the Throne of God, as described in the Koran. Made of marble, the Taj Mahal is decorated with geometric designs and verses from the Koran written in fine calligraphy. Reconstructions, stunning location filming, and evocative re-enactments make this film a visual delight. ~ Rose of Sharon Winter, All Movie Guide.
