The Lost Gospel

The National Geographic Society has been part of an international effort, in collaboration with the Maecenas Foundation for Ancient Art and the Waitt Institute for Historical Discovery, to authenticate, conserve, and translate a 66-page codex, which contains a text called James (also known as First Apocalypse of James), the Letter of Peter to Philip, a fragment of a text that scholars are provisionally calling Book of Allogenes, and the only known surviving copy of the Gospel of Judas.

To most Christians, Judas is seen as a traitor, the disciple who betrayed Jesus to the Romans for 30 pieces of silver. But a newly restored papyrus document dating to the 2nd century AD portrays a very different man. Judas is shown as Jesus' best friend, asked by Jesus himself to betray his identity to fulfill the prophecy and liberate his soul to ascend to heaven.

Gospel of Judas presents traitor as Jesus's favourite

Prof Bart Ehrman, a writer on early Christianity, said: "In the struggle among early Christian groups for recruits only one emerged victorious and it had decided which books to include in the New Testament".
But the Bible Society said that it would be "miraculous" if the gospel was actually written by Judas, since he had been dead for over 100 years.

When the National Geographic Society announced to great fanfare last week that it had gained access to a 1,700-year-old document known as the Gospel of Judas, it described how a deteriorating manuscript, unearthed in Egypt three decades ago, had made its way through the shady alleys of the antiquities market to a safe-deposit box on Long Island and eventually to a Swiss art dealer who "rescued" it from obscurity.

If true, it turns 2,000 years of belief on its head and clears the way for one of the most unlikely rehabilitations in history.
Elaine Pagels, professor of religion at Princeton University, New Jersey, says: "The Gospel of Judas is transforming our understanding of early Christianity. Whether one agrees with it or finds it reprehensible, it's an enormously interesting perspective."

Now we have, recovered from the desert of Egypt, a 26-page "Gospel of Judas," written in Coptic script about 300 years after the events it purportedly describes. This fragment may or may not be related to the "Nag Hammadi library"—a collection of gospels, including those of Thomas and Mary Magdalene, that were unearthed near an ancient Egyptian monastery in 1945.

No cover-up behind the Gospel, says Williams by The Telegraph. (English)
Conspiracy theories and newly discovered ancient texts will not undermine the truth of the Gospel, the Archbishop of Canterbury said in his Easter Sunday sermon.
The best-selling thriller, The Da Vinci Code, and the recently unearthed "Gospel of Judas" might appeal to people's sense of mystery, but the real Bible transformed lives, Dr Rowan Williams said at Canterbury Cathedral.
