Sacred Arts of Haitian Vodou

image

Vodou is the Creole religion. Like the Haitian people, Vodou spirits came from Africa, and they have been profoundly affected by slavery and hard won freedom. To honor and serve these spirits, Haitians create ceremonial art based on African models and influenced by Catholic, Masonic and other spiritual traditions. The sacred arts of Vodou are the outstanding achievement of a great people and their incomparable gift to the world.

However, Vodou is more than a religion—it is a way of life which has inspired Haitian artists in many different media. After the Second World War, the work of Haitian artists came to the attention of foreign dealers and collectors who spoke of a "Haitian Renaissance".

Haitian Vodouists revere a supreme God (Bondye) and a world of powerful spirits, called the Lwa, who link the human with the divine. There are hundreds of lwa in the Vodou religion, and each has its own personality, strengths, weaknesses, and favorite objects.

E.g. Bosou, the three-horned bull, is something like a spiritual 'body guard,' often invoked for protection. He has Rada and Petwo sides but is

image

most often seen in his Petwo aspect where he connects closely with Kongo spirits of the crossroads and the grave.

image

Altars are arranged to honor and invoke the lwa. They may be located in temple sanctuaries or in private bedrooms. Wherever they are found, they mark a sacred space where the natural and supernatural worlds meet. On the altars, worshipers assemble images of the lwa, together with offerings-jewelry, mirrors, liquor, perfume, cigarettes, sunglasses-known to please divine tastes.

In return, the lwa are expected to answer prayers for health, love or good fortune.

The Art of Greg Spalenka

image
Snow Faerie

From the beginning it seems as if my art was borne of two worlds. One world was sensual, dark and mysterious, the other spiritual, light and magical. Two sides of my nature competing for and completing my creative vision. As a little boy I was brought up in the Catholic faith. The imagery and feeling that came with standing in a large church with statues of various saints looking over me, candles flickering, and glowing stained glass windows was hypnotizing. I was enthralled and impressed, but I knew there was a cathedral inside my head too. I got glimpses of it now and then and it was magnificent.

Egyptian Enigma

To see through the eyes of a visionary artist is to behold the works of the Almighty, that in all this vast universe, we witness the creativity of a Supreme Intelligence down even to the smallest atom, and even within that, the microcosmic existence of worlds within worlds, all perfect, all divine and ever enchanting; the River of Time, teeming with the diversity of Life, flowing from Eternity to infinity.

The Fantastic in Art and Fiction

Magic The Black Arts and the Occult: The basis of many a fantastic tale involves an invisible world of secrets, accessible with a particular kind of knowledge.

Magic, alchemy and the occult are thus keys that allow entry into certain zones of the Fantastic. More important, they drive the intellectual engine of the Fantastic; even as they wane, they preside over the gestation of science fiction. The grimoire of the Magus becomes the mad-scientist’s user’s manual. Our selections include depictions of witches and sorcerers, instruction pages from the classic work of secret sciences entitled The Magus, illustrations of alchemical workshops, cabalistic mappings of biblical passages, and cover illustrations from the first issues of Amazing Stories, Hugo Gernsbach’s celebrated pulp journal devoted to science and fantastic fiction.

Weird Science

The religious supernatural recognizes\zed a self torn between transcendent forces that fought for its possession. The Devil and his minions, the Demons, engaged in a struggle for the soul with the angels and guardian spirits. When the religious supernatural expresses the search for salvation in terms of conflict and terror it anticipates the universe of Fantastic anxiety.

A particular interest in this cluster of images is the material drawn from Cornell's extensive Witchcraft collection.

An extraordinary compilation where the paradigmatic struggle between observation and vision so crucial to the Fantastic is constantly played out. By the time of the early Enlightenment, the Bestiary, like its more recnent relative the Encyclopedia, participates in the totalizing intent of a catalogue whose purpose is the scientific understanding of the world. Empirical observation banishes from these increasingly imposing tomes any creatures that have not been observed in their environment. So the unicorn and the dragon, the griffon and the sea serpent, and all their relations take refuge in the annals of folklore, until the fantastic and its adjudant, surrealism, release them once more into literary discourse from the prisons where rational inquiry had consigned them.

The Art of Josephine Wall

Much of the inspiration for her mystical images comes from her close observation of nature and her interest in its preservation. Though she often strives to impart a message in her scenes, she also hopes to inspire in her audience a personal journey into the magical world of their own imagination.

image

Call of the Sea

From deep below the waves a beautiful goddess rises from her watery home, to blow her enchanted conch shell.
As she plays, a stream of nautical wonders pour forth. Mermaids and seahorses swim among a myriad of fish heading for the ocean depths, accompanied by playful dolphins.
The mighty city of Atlantis is found again and galleons once more set off on their journeys of discovery.

Thirst for Knowledge

Contained within a single dewdrop tear is a world of education. Mother nature dips her hands into the pool of learning, and as she opens them a mother is revealed bestowing the most precious of gifts to her child – knowledge. The young have a thirst for information which must be fed, and lessons that we learn in youth will map our route through life.

Starship

Guided by a star-angel, the star ship makes it's way to a magical land of giant lilies and mystical castles. A tattooed goddess reaches out to greet her visitor from the 'galaxsea'.

Thousand Hand Bodhisattva

How many hands can you count in this picture?

image
Source Taipei Times

No matter how hard you look, you won't be able to find 1,000, but the dance these people are doing is called "Thousand Hand Bodhisattva".

In some kinds of Buddhism, a bodhisattva is a person who lives to help other people become better and better. In one very old Buddhist story, a bodhisattva was trying to reach all the people of the world, but the bodhisattva's two hands were not enough, so the bodhisattva was given a 1,000. This dance is a way of showing how beautiful that might be.

The bodhisattva with 1,000 hands is worshipped in many countries. In some countries the bodhisattva is shown as a woman, and in some countries as a man. The bodhisattva is called "Chenrezig" in Tibet, "Avalokitesvara" in India, "Guan Yin" in China, and "Kannon" in Japan.

Enchanted Art of Mickie Mueller

Our earth is our mother, too often we see the burdens that our society has placed on her and the ill effects they have on the environment. We must all do what we can to help protect our planet by treating her with loving care and being responsible for how we use and reuse the resources she provides us with. She gives us life, energy, and many gifts unnumbered. Many Pagans feel the responsibility so deeply that in addition to the things that we can all do to help our earth, they also send healing spiritual energy to the planet. People of many faiths often send prayers to the earth.

image
Heal the Earth

The girl in "Heal the Earth" has sent healing energy into the crystals that she plants in the earth. This energy is sent through concentration and love. She is surrounded by spirits representing the four elements. A Sylph or fairy of the air hovers in great interest over her right shoulder. A fish-tailed Nymph from a nearby pond brings water as a symbol of healing and love. An earth Gnome rests comfortably near the spade used to gently part the soil. A nearby Salamander supplies energy. Salamanders were considered fire spirits due to the fact that in ancient times they would hide in logs, and appear scampering away when the fire was lit.

"I call upon the Universal Power that flows through everything.
My Earth, my Mother is in need, I bring to her this healing deed.
By warming sun and cooling breeze,
To ancient mountains, towering trees,
To mysterious oceans pulled by the moon,
To fertile soil from which life blooms.
I send to her loving energy, healing power, so mote it be!"

image
The Moon Goddess

The moon has been represented as feminine in spirit by many world cultures. She is the cool shining counterpart to the fiery masculine sun. She is often associated with healing and rebirth due to the ever changing cycles of the silvery orb. She is also associated with love, childbirth, prophesy, and magic. Wiccans and other modern earth-nature oriented religions regard the moon as a source of power to effect positive change and inspiration.

The moon effects the tides, and as we are mostly water many believe she effects our emotions and energy with her magnetic pull. Just ask any police officer or emergency room worker, or anyone who works with the public, they will tell you that you can always tell when it's a full moon.

The Art of Steven Peabody

image

Artist Statement:

"The object of my art is to work with the creative process using symbols of reality and fantasy to produce paintings of transcendental thought".

Steven Peabody was born November 14, 1947 in Manhattan. He attended The School of Visual Arts in NYC, NY. Studying with, amongst other artists, Gil Stone. Gil Stone, introduced him to classical layering techniques, under painting and over painting, from the Renaissance period which had a profound influence on the the artist’s artistic evolution.

Early influences were Dali and Roberto Matta and during the 1980’s Ed Paashe and Alex Grey. Pivotal points came after art school when Peabody’s style developed from classical surrealism to biomorphic surrealism with the addition of sacred geometry.

Later exploration was a study of Mandalas which produced the “Diamond” series.

Returning to figurative work and experimenting with color bleeds and auras, in an effort to create luminous figures, he now works with composite figures and symbols to develop paintings involving human and spiritual directions.

Jesus - With You Always

The enclosed images are from 11x14 pencil drawings that are the result of an undertaking that began when I was 50 years old. I was awakened in the middle of the night with a clear, vivid impression that the Lord wanted me to do some special drawings -- drawings depicting ordinary people in their everyday environment . . . . with one important addition: the presence of Jesus Christ and His involvement in those routine activities.

It was also clear that the task would be allotted ten years to produce results -- an important consideration, considering the fact that I had never drawn anything before, had no training in drawing, and had never really been interested in drawing.

The objective of the "With you always" series has, from the very beginning, been very clear to me: to help Christians everywhere visualize the reality of Jesus' presence in their lives at all times.

"I am with you always, even to the ends of the earth" (Matthew 28:20). Hence, a portion of that scripture, the phrase "With you always", became the title for the finished product(s).

The Mermaids of Juan Cabana

image
Fiji Mermaid

Mermaids exist in the twilight place between land and sea, in the psychological intertidal zone between life-giver and life-taker. Wanton, seductive and alluring, these amphibious goddesses of classical myth toy unabashedly with a man’s affections, offering him sweetness yet bringing only death. The paintings of the pre-Raphaelites portray mermaids as lovely maidens with a silvery aquatic tail, who comb their luxurious tresses in serene repose along a placid shore, but the mermaids of old were neither so innocent nor demure. With the sultry curve of their breasts and the dulcet darkness of their dreamy eyes, those half-forgotten ocean deities promised to reveal the secrets of the unattainable fathoms, only to drown men with their savage affection.

We are fascinated by mermaids because they represent the unknown, the mystical, and the dangerous predator behind a graceful face. Mermaids have captured our interest in the same way in which they snared the hearts of sailors, dizzying us and disorienting us, pulling us under the turquoise waves.

Many of the oldest stories claim that the merfolk have no tongues, yet this doesn’t keep them from casting their spell over the poor unfortunate who falls in love with them; one tale tells of a fisherman’s daughter who becomes infatuated with a merman but, when she discovers that he can never proclaim his love for her, she follows him into the ocean, only to perish.

Some claim that mermaids still sing their wordless melodies, playing amongst the waters and the waves. Juan Cabana, wandering the lonely shores of secluded beaches, has often found the mortal remains of these creatures. In life, they swim below the surface and rarely rise from the crushing deep, but upon death, the merciless storms cast their bodies up from the dark waters to deposit them on the white sand. Juan knows the distant coves where the currents bring them, and he gathers their remains with the hope of preserving them, honoring them, and showing humanity that we are not the only intelligent species on this beautiful planet. These teratisms of terrible beauty, wild and exotic, lie beyond the taint of human civilisation. They live in harmony with their aquatic environment, and Juan's respect for them has resulted in a never-ending search for mermaids and sea monsters around the world.

I assure you that they are art, maybe macabre art.
Artist Juan Cabana, using the remains of dead fish and assorted animals as his medium, creates fantastic new lifeforms for people to enjoy today. His life-like creations reflect his interest in Cryptozoology, Anthropology and Science Fiction. Currently, sea monsters and mermaids are his central focus. Juan hopes to someday have the world’s largest sea creature museum.

Awaken Visions

image

image

image

Artistic talent combined with life-long exploration of consciousness and devotion to self-realization has given Daniel B. Holeman an ability to depict uplifting and profound sacred imagery. His inspirational paintings have a strong impact and an uncanny affect on people. Many are deeply touched emotionally – sometimes brought to tears - and describe his paintings as the most beautiful pictures they have ever seen.

Daniel feels it is not so much the beauty as the place it stirs in people that they are responding to. He invites the viewer to dive into a deeper dimension of consciousness while viewing his paintings. The imagery stirs forgotten awareness of a place felt to be HOME – a warm, familiar and heartfelt state of mind – a welcome contrast to the day-to-day world we live in.

Self-taught techniques include oil on canvas with airbrush touchup. The mandala works are pen and ink on paper, and then colored on computer. Rather than appealing to select markets, such as "New Age" and "Spiritual", his work appeals to a good percentage of people in all categories - perhaps anyone who appreciates or longs for that heartfelt place - thus crossing race, social, gender, religious and ethnic boundaries.

Faery & Fantasy Art by Selina Fenech

image

"Alluring... Arrogant...
In magic she shimmers.

Delicious soft whispers,
Come hither, come hither!

Dark enchantress, wicked delight,
A sentry to lure in mortals by night.

To come away, come away,
Dash softly hand in hand
Slip through the veil
Off to fairy land."

Australian artist Selina Fenech was born in 1981 and has always felt the burn of magic in her heart. Her daydreams of magical creatures and places were irrepressible, and goddesses, fairies and nature spirits started showing up in her artwork from a very early age. She has always had a great love and appreciation of the magic of nature, and frequently gets lost in mythology and fairytales which all inspire her greatly.

While she always loved to draw, she didn't know she wanted to, or could, be an artist for quite some time. When she was sixteen years old she placed a few of her artworks in an online gallery and was amazed when fan mail and print and commission requests started coming in. Always wanting to please, and excited to be sharing her passion for art and magic, Selina began taking commissions and producing fine art prints of her work, and her art career has grown steadily since then, seeing publication in books and magazines worldwide and a range of licensed merchandise.
