The Gale Encyclopedia of the Unusual and Unexplained

'The Gale Encyclopedia of the Unusual and Unexplained' consists of fourteen broad-subject chapters covering a wide range of high-interest topics: Afterlife Mysteries; Mediums and Mystics; Religious Phenomena; Mystery Religions and Cults; Secret Societies; Magic and Sorcery; Prophecy and Divination; Objects of Mystery and Power; Places of Mystery and Power; Ghosts and Phantoms; Mysterious Creatures; Mysteries of the Mind; Superstitions, Strange Customs, Taboos, and Urban Legends; and Invaders from Outer Space.

Each chapter begins with an Overview that summarizes the chapter’s concept in a few brief sentences. Then the Chapter Exploration provides a complete outline of the chapter.

image

Further each chapter contains photographs, line drawings, and original graphics that were chosen to complement the text; in all three volumes, approximately 300 photos and illustrations images enliven the text.

The Steigers, prolific writers on the paranormal, have written an encyclopedia for believers. The volumes are meant to "explore and describe the research of those who take such phenomena seriously". Almost everything from mediumship to crop circles is taken at face value. Even Houdini's attacks on phony mediums are interpreted to suggest he was taking on frauds and not real mediums.

The work covers material of interest to a large segment of the public in a way that is clear and readable.

The second, with 289 further prophetic verses, was printed in 1557.

Ian Ridpath’s Star Tales - Constellation Mythology

Corvus and Crater

These two adjacent constellations are linked in a moral tale that goes back at least to the time of Eratosthenes.

image

As told by Ovid in his Fasti, Apollo was about to make a sacrifice to Zeus and sent the crow to fetch water from a running spring. The crow flew off with a bowl in its claws until it came to a fig tree laden with unripe fruit. Ignoring its orders, the crew waited several days for the fruit to ripen, by which time Apollo had been forced to find a source of water for himself.

Canis Minor

This constellation originally consisted of just its brightest star Procyon, whose name in Greek means ‘before the dog’ from the fact that it rises earlier than the other celestial dog, Canis Major. It is a small constellation and contains little of interest other than Procyon itself, the eighth-brightest star in the heavens.

Canis Minor is usually identified as one of the dogs of Orion.

image

But in a famous legend from Attica (the area around Athens), recounted by the mythographer Hyginus, the constellation represents Maera, dog of Icarius, the man whom the god Dionysus first taught to make wine.

image

This book had its origins in my skywatching guides for amateur astronomers. As I came to describe each constellation, I found myself wondering about its origin and the way in which ancient people had personified it in mythology. Astronomy books did not contain satisfactory answers. They either gave no mythology at all, or they recounted stories that, I later discovered, were not true to the Greek originals. I decided to write my own book on the mythology of the constellations.

The result, Star Tales, appeared in 1988 and remains a favourite of mine although it is now difficult to obtain. To make it more widely available, I have now transferred it to the web with amendments and enhancements.

Ayurvedic Astrology: Self-Healing Through the Stars

This is probably the first book available that jointly examines both Ayurveda and Vedic astrology in detail for the modern reader.

image

Ayurvedic Medicine represents the healing branch of yogic science, while Vedic astrology provides its understanding of time and karma.

Ayurvedic astrology teaches the interface of these two extraordinary systems in the Vedic astrology of healing.

The book explains how the different mind-body and planetary types of the two systems interrelate.

It examines disease factors from an astrological perspective and goes in depth into astrological remedial measures, particularly gem therapy. It also contains many notable example charts.

Ayurvedic Astrology: Self-Healing Through the Stars by Dr. David Frawley
Lotus Press, 2005 | 268 pages | PDF | 13.9 MB

Review:
Vamadeva Shastri in his latest book, "Ayurvedic Astrology," unlocks ancient astrological understandings of the human body's inherent weaknesses based on positions of die planets and stars at birth. In so doing, he guides us to avert sickness by applying detailed traditional Vedic remedial measures and then helps us understand the karma behind illnesses when they do manifest. Here, for the first time in a single book, two of India's remarkable gifts to mankind—Vedic knowledge of healing and Jyotish—are interwoven in a tapestry of wellness, providing invaluable tools for professional astrologers, ayurvedic practitioners and novices of both sciences.

The Devil’s Dictionary

The Devil's Dictionary, by Ambrose Bierce, is a satirical book published in 1911. It offers reinterpretations of terms in the English language which lampoon cant and political double-talk. Fun to read as well as thought-provoking. Just because the dictionary is 90 years old doesn't make it any less apropos for modern readers.

Book Description:

History, n. an account mostly false, of events mostly unimportant, which are brought about by rulers mostly knaves, and soldiers mostly fools. Marriage, n. The state or condition of a community consisting of a master, a mistress, and two slaves, making in all two. Self-Esteem, n. An erroneous appraisement.

These caustic aphorisms, collected in The Devil's Dictionary, helped earn Ambrose Bierce the epithets Bitter Bierce, the Devil's Lexicographer, and the Wickedest Man in San Francisco.

image

First published as The Cynic's Word Book (1906) and later reissued under its preferred name in 1911, Bierce's notorious collection of barbed definitions forcibly contradicts Samuel Johnson's earlier definition of a lexicographer as a harmless drudge. There was nothing harmless about Ambrose Bierce, and the words he shaped into verbal pitchforks a century ago--with or without the devil's help--can still draw blood today.

Draw Your Own Celtic Designs

This is not just an exciting step by step guide to drawing Celtic designs! Starting with an illustrated introduction to the Celts, this book has also some wonderful photographs of carvings, illustrated manuscripts, etc., and fascinating text by David James of the history of the Celts and their art.

image

The following chapters examine each of the main Celtic patterns in turn: knots, spirals, key patterns, animals and beasts, and Celtic lettering.

Each chapter opens with a large colour illustration to inspire readers in ways of incorporating the design into their own work. This is followed by a short introduction to the range of patterns that fall into this design category, along with photos of Celtic artefacts.

The rest of the chapter consists of 16 design pages, each containing a specially commissioned step-by-step artwork for readers to follow.

Beautiful to look at, and exquisitely executed in themselves, each artwork has been carefully constructed so that readers can follow its build up from start to finish with no possibility of error. The chapter on Celtic lettering contains a specially commissioned double-page artwork of the Celtic alphabet for readers to copy, and is followed by instructions on how to embellish each of the letter forms in Celtic styles.

Bandha Yoga

Patanjali, the patron saint of yoga, said that mastery combines a balance of science and art. Knowledge of science is like the colors on an artist’s pallet – the greater the knowledge, the more colors available. The body is the canvas and the asanas are the art we create.

Human anatomy and physiology is a vast subject, as is the art of hatha yoga. Nevertheless, combining knowledge from both fields is extremely beneficial to the yoga practitioner. Athletes can improve their performance and experience fewer injuries through a basic understanding of their musculoskeletal system. Similarly, yoga practitioners can benefit from the application of Western science to their practice development.

It is not necessary to memorize hundreds of muscles and bones to experience the benefits of applying science to yoga. What is necessary is the functional understanding of a manageable number of key anatomic structures in their settings as they relate to hatha yoga. Knowledge of these structures can be applied immediately to optimize your practice, break through blockages and avoid injuries.

How To Read Your Astrological Chart

If you have been practicing for a year and don't feel comfortable reading an actual horoscope, then this is the book you need!

The more we learn and the more astrological factors we know about, the more complex it can become to read a chart. Cunningham takes us back to the basics in a way that brings new richness to every chart you will read.

image

This book is past the beginner stage, but defnitely appropriate for those that have the basic understanding of the planets, their energy in signs and in houses.

What distinguishes Donna Cunningham's work is her ability to accurately measure a chart. That is kind of like baking a cake with a cup of all ingredients. Not all things inside the chart are weighted equal and it is the complex blend of aspects and their degree of orb, and the patterns created within the chart that define more fully the bigger picture. Donna Cunningham teaches you in her astrological "cookbook" to respect that and to utilize a multi-textured process to refine your understanding of the chart.

Ashtanga Yoga As Taught

Ashtanga Yoga is an ancient system of Yoga that was taught by Vamana Rishi in the Yoga Korunta. This text was imparted to Sri T. Krishnamacharya in the early 1900's by his Guru Rama Mohan Brahmachari, and was later passed down to Pattabhi Jois during the duration of his studies with Krishnamacharya, beginning in 1927.

How To Use This Manual:
The basics of ashtanga yoga cannot be learned enough. Because yoga practice is progressive it is important to go through this manual in the order it is presented. However, if you are having difficulty with any of the postures go back to the beginning. Keep in mind that the true source of understanding is in the basic principals underlying the asanas. Take your time and learn the fundamentals of the practice. Go slowly. Never force or push yourself into a posture, be patient, and all will come in time. What’s the rush?

Most of all, have fun! Enjoy the process of building your yoga practice and bringing peace into your life and those around you.

The Seven Spiritual Laws of Yoga

image

If you love yoga then you'll love this book!

It begins with insightful questions to help you find the real "you" and then progresses to explain the different types of yoga practices. But the real value in the book is the section discussing the Seven Spirtual Laws.

You will understand the importance of not forcing the body to obey moves but it is in allowing the inner Self to assist in all of the movements. There is a wonderful section on yoga positions with excellent photos and descriptions of how to attain the pose.

Chopra also discusses meditation, how to practice it and methods for success.

Buddha: A Story of Enlightenment

Chopra is best known for his spiritual how-to books. Here, he turns to fiction, writing about the life of Prince Siddhartha, who became the Buddha.

Chopra divides his book into three parts. The first chronicles the youth of a motherless boy who has a destiny: to be a spiritual leader as foretold by astronomers at his birth. But his powerful father refuses to bow to fate and keeps his son isolated from the world.

In the second part, Siddhartha, now a husband and father, sees suffering and decides to leave his life of leisure and become a monk. Despite extreme asceticism and a duel with a demon, enlightenment eludes him.

In the final section, Siddhartha sees the error of trying to defeat his body and, in one night, achieves enlightenment and becomes the Buddha.

image

Chopra's "Practical Guide to Buddhism" at the end were instructional stepping off points, a guide with commentary and teachings on core Buddhist principles. Written so they make sense to the western mind.

A refreshing novel, and an inspiring read!
