The Runic Journey

Runes are an alphabetic script used by the peoples of Northern Europe from the first century c.e. until well into the Middle Ages. In addition to their use as a written alphabet, the runes also served as a system of symbols used for magic and divination. Runes fell into disuse as the Roman alphabets became the preferred script of most of Europe, but their forms and meanings were preserved in inscriptions and manuscripts.

The primary characteristic which distinguishes a runic alphabet from other alphabets is that each letter, or rune, has a meaning. For example, whereas "ay", "bee", and "cee" are meaningless sounds denoting the first three letters in our alphabet, the names of the first three runes, "fehu", "uruz", and "þurisaz" are actual words in the Germanic language, meaning "cattle", "aurochs", and "giant", respectively. Runes also have magical and religious significance as well, thus transforming the simple process of writing into a magical act. They are also used for divinatory readings and to create magical spells.



Today, runes have been rediscovered as a symbolic system and have gained immense popularity as a means of divination. They are, however, much more than a curious alternative to Tarot cards for telling fortunes. They provide a key to understanding the lives and beliefs of the ancient people who created them, and have much to teach us about a way of life that was perhaps more inimately connected to the natural world, and to the realm of spirit, than our own.

Shambala

Some people say that Shambala is hidden in a remote part of the Himalayas. Some call this mysterious kingdom "a house of the immortals" - Gyanganj. It is identified as Shambala, Shangri-La or Siddhashram, but this "wondrous land" has many other names too.

In Tibet, the word for a legendary and enlightened kingdom, "Shambala", means a "source of fortune". It is not the "heaven" we see from our Earth, but a mystical kingdom that guards the most secret spiritual teachings of the world and of the universe, including the Kala Chakra tantra, the Wheel of Time, which is a pillar of the Buddhist wisdom.

By certain meditation exercises and good perception, clever adepts may succeed to peep into this realm. Buddhism connects Shambala with Buddha who allegedly took form of one of the Kala Chakra gods and delivered his highest teaching to a group of followers in Southern India. Among these was also Suchandra, who was the king of the northeastern Indian kingdom and he requested this teaching from Buddha.

In ancient India and Tibet, there were small kingdoms scattered around the area. In Tibet, apart from the shamanistic Bön culture, also existed the Zhang Zhung culture. It is known that the concept of Shambala predated Buddhism. The Mongolians identify it with certain parts of southern Siberia. Ancient Zhang Zhung texts identify Shambala as a place in the Sutlej Valley in Himachal Pradesh in northwest India. The Tibetan Buddhism, which later developed in the region, adopted many aspects of the above cultures including the concept of Shambala. But according to the present Dalai Lama, "Shambala is not a physical place to find anywhere on Earth".

Bequests of Shambala are part of the Indian history - that is, they can be found both in Hinduism and Buddhism in ancient writings. Interesting is the fact that near the area of Sutlej Valley exists a place called Kongka La, which is in the disputed China-India border and the local people report that UFOs can be seen here coming out of the ground.

Our culture is focused on seeing something first, only then does follow believing that things we see do actually exist. The mystical kingdom of Shambala can only be approached in a reversed direction: to believe in its existence at first, then coming closer to it, if we have luck. Hindus call it Paradesha or Aryavarsha - that is, a place from which the holy Vedas came from. Celts knew Shambala under the name Avalon. Tibetan texts describe Shambala also as a holy Mount Meru with notes that technology of its inhabitants is very advanced. In Greek mythology, Shambala is known as Hyperborea.

Tribe: The Babongo People

The Babongo of Gabon used to be known, derogatively, as pygmies. They're still treated as second-class citizens by their neighbours. But their expertise and knowledge of the forests is unique and their use of Iboga, a powerful hallucinogenic which lies at the heart of Babongo culture, makes them famous throughout Gabon.

The Babongo believe they were the first people on earth. They share the forest with the Macoi, ambivalent spirit figures at once malevolent and benign. Drumming calls them from the forest, and they must be appeased at every turn - there's a ritual for every action, and countless forms of ceremony.

When a person dies, for instance, the Babongo believe their spirit will linger in the village and cause harm. The village must be cleansed through drumming, dancing and ritual. The women wash the body indoors and wrap it in a cloth. Then the men carry it to the graveyard in the forest for burial. The women paint their faces white with kaolin to symbolise purification, and dance and sing to put the dead person's spirit to rest. After three days and three nights of mourning, the funeral is declared over.

Go tribal with former Royal Marines officer and expedition leader Bruce Parry as he becomes a guest of the Babongo people. On Bruce's visit: he is initiated into the Bwiti religion by ingesting the sometimes fatal drug, Iboga.
The Babongo people have no formal system of government or chiefs, and traditionally, each small group within the tribe had rights to the territory where they lived and hunted. They know the forest intimately, and are expert trackers - they can find a bee hive by following the flight path of a single bee. The countries they live in give them no legal right over their territory, and their way of life is in danger because of deforestation.

Megalithes du Morbihan & The Carnac Stones - France

Located at the heart of the largest megalithic area in western France, the Morbihan, and more particularly its coastal area, concentrates a large number of monuments, which are exceptional by their scale and variety. This implies the presence of a particularly dense and dynamic population, sufficiently prosperous to build such monuments.

There are almost 500 megalithic sites in Morbihan, but they are unevenly distributed over the area:
The main concentrations lies along the coast between the Blavet estuary and the Rhuys peninsula (including the Morbihan Gulf, the Quiberon peninsula and the Isle of Groix), in particular between the Etel and Auray river estuaries
Another large group of monuments is located on the Landes de Lanvaux, a line of hills between the Claie and Arz valleys, from the Blavet river in the West to the Oust river in the East.
Northern Morbihan has fewer monuments, but they are evenly distributed.
The area between the coast and the Landes de Lanvaux is relatively empty.

Scattered throughout the landscape around the town of Carnac on the south coast of Brittany, France are hundreds of megalithic sites. The word megalith comes from the Greek for big (megas) stone (lithos). Neolithic people living in the Carnac region began building these megaliths around 5000 BC and continued for the next 2000 years.

But why did they build them?

Some megaliths, dolmen (stone passages) and tumuli (dolmen covered by large mounds) are graves and some single standing stones (menhirs) are associated with graves. But the reason for building the long lines of stones (alignments), the stone circles (cromlechs) and many of the menhirs has been lost in the mists of time. Some people think that they are calendars and observatories, so that ancient farmers knew the seasons and when to plant and harvest their crops and the priests could foretell terrifying phenomena such as eclipses of the sun and moon. Alexander Thom, who has surveyed many megaliths in Britain and France, believes that Carnac was a huge lunar observatory. The central of the complex was the huge broken menhir, Le Grand Menhir Brisé, beside the Marchand's Table and Er Grah tumuli at Locmariaquer. The sights to various tumuli and menhirs marked the extreme positions of the moon.

Carnac is the most dramatic of all the Breton sites, with more than 3,000 prehistoric stone monuments. These include long avenues of menhirs (single standing stones) and dolmens (multi-stone arrangements supporting horizontal slabs). Hewn from local granite, they were erected at different periods from early to late Neolithic (c. 4000-1500 B.C.). Now worn by nature and time, they are covered with white lichen. Traditions of the Sun

The great house of Pueblo Bonito is the largest of all Chacoan structures with around 700 rooms. It is located in "downtown," which is the term used to describe the dense group of ancient sites found in this area of the canyon. The view of Pueblo Bonito from the overlook trail shows the building's traditional D-shaped floor plan. A small white truck barely visible in the plaza provides a sense of scale.

An impressive feature of Pueblo Bonito is its alignment to the cardinal directions. A line drawn through the center of the half moon shape forms a precise north-south axis and the eastern-half of its southern wall is aligned east-west. On the spring and fall equinoxes, the Sun rises and sets in perfect alignment with this wall.

Dr. Shelley Valdez, a member of the Pueblo Laguna Tribe, explained the importance of the cardinal directions, "(They) connect people, the seasons, the Sun and Moon's patterns, time, nature, the environment, the cosmos, and ceremonial systems. Observance of the cardinal directions and the Sun essentially ensured life by knowing when it was time to plant, harvest, and hunt for example. Pueblo Bonito is a physical manifestation of these ideas."

The Observatory, or Caracol, so-called for the spiral staircase that winds up through its interior, served as an observatory for gathering astronomical data about the sun, moon, and planet Venus. To have a round temple construction with windows is extremely rare; these windows provide for complex charting of the movement of astral bodies. For example, the line of sight through the west wall cuts straight through the setting sun on the spring equinox; another line of sight picks up the moonset on the same date.

This ancient observatory was used by its priests to chart the rising and setting positions of the sun, moon, and the planet venus. The platform, door jambs, and window jambs are all positioned to serve this purpose.

Summer Solstice Meditation

Tomorrow celebrate the sun!

Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths and relax.

At this time of greatest light, we meditate on light as a symbol of spiritual energy. Breathe now gently and deeply and with each breath become aware of the light that surrounds you and the light that is within you -- the light that is the energy of Our Great Mother.

The light can be any color. It is often imagined as white -- like bright sunlight. But it can be any color, any intensity, that is best for you. Blue, green, yellow, purple, rose; we know that light can also be black. The light may stay the same color for you during this meditation or it may change from color to color, or become a blend of many colors.


See the light now in your mind's eye. This light is all around us, we are bathed in its brightness, energy, and warmth.

(Pause)

Focus on the light until you sense that you and the light are one. This will be your signal that you can now bring the light inside you.

(Pause)

When you bring the light inside you, one way is to let it stream in through your crown chakra at the top of your head. (If it's already entered another way, that's okay.)

The light -- this healing energy -- flows through you now, from your crown, down to your third eye (between your eyebrows) to your throat, your shoulders and your arms, and your hands, to your heart, your stomach, shining brightly at your solar plexus just above your navel, to your sex organs, shining too at your tailbone. The healing light travels down through your legs, your knees, your ankles and your feet. Feel the warmth of this healing energy now as it travels all through your body.

(Pause)

Now sense the one part of your body where the light can shine the brightest and imagine the light there. See it shine.

(Pause)

Now send the light out from that part of your body where it shines the brightest. Send it out a few inches from your body.

(Pause)

Now extend your light out from your body just a little more, then a little more, until your light extends a few feet from your body. Now, if you like, extend your light to reach your sisters. Our lights meet and we are connected by this great light, connected by our renewed knowledge of Our Great Mother. Take a few minutes now to sense this energy and this connectedness.

(Pause)

Now take from this light the energy that you need, and know that there is plenty for all. For the Source of this light is endless and ever abundant. Take a moment to experience Her abundance, and know that as you partake of Her light and Her love, so do you give your light and your love. And as you give energy, so do you receive it. And thus does the circle of life continue.
(Pause)

And as we come back now to this time and place, let us give thanks for the return of Our Great Mother, and for our return unto Her.

Summer Solstice Fests Have Deep Roots

Summer solstice, the longest day of the year, inspired Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream" and is associated with the exile of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. Solstice festivals abound in the United States, from Norwegian bonfires to pagan candlelight labyrinths and American Indian drumming rituals.

On the summer solstice, as the sun reaches its highest point directly over the tropic of Cancer at an angle of 23 degrees 27 minutes north, countless festivities will start to heat up.

Known variously throughout Europe as the Feast of Epona, Gathering Day, Johannistag, Litha, Vestalia and Midsummer, the summer solstice was viewed across cultures as a period of peak fertility and a time for weddings. The term "honeymoon" sprang from Celtic tradition and referred to the June moon and the fermented honey mead drunk at wedding celebrations.

Shakespeare's romantic comedy "A Midsummer Night's Dream" commemorates the magical pairings of the solstice, and Aragorn and Arwen hold their nuptials on that night in Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

But romance isn't the only reason to party on the summer solstice, which arrives on or about June 21. For numerous religious and ethnic groups, it is a time to pay tribute to nature and express cultural pride.

In Europe, the first day of summer involves revelry with deep pagan roots as tourists and religious groups gather to dance, drum and chant at Stonehenge, a 4,000-year-old stone structure in England.

In North America, the holiday has become a melting pot of sorts, with celebrations crisscrossing the continent, mixing European traditions, American Indian spirituality and new-age environmentalism.

One such festival is the Pagan Spirit Gathering in Wisteria, Ohio, held each June at a 620-acre nature preserve in the foothills. Now in its 26th year, the eight-day event is expected to draw hundreds of people from across the country and abroad to commune with nature.

The Secret of El Dorado
