The Elegant Universe

Welcome to the 11th Dimension:
String theory is radically changing our ideas about the nature of space, opening up the possibility that extra dimensions, rips in the fabric of space, and parallel universes actually exist.

String's the Thing:
In order to solve some of the deepest mysteries of the universe, the rules that govern large objects like galaxies must be combined with the rules that govern small objects like subatomic particles.

Einstein's Dream:
Now string theory—the idea that everything is made of tiny, vibrating strands of energy—holds out the hope of unifying the world of the very large and the world of the very small.

The Elegant Universe online!

For most of us, or perhaps all of us, it's impossible to imagine a world consisting of more than three spatial dimensions. Are we correct when we intuit that such a world couldn't exist? Or is it that our brains are simply incapable of imagining additional dimensions—dimensions that may turn out to be as real as other things we can't detect?

The System of W. B. Yeats’s “A Vision”

On the afternoon of October 24th 1917, four days after my marriage, my wife surprised me by attempting automatic writing. What came in disjointed sentences, in almost illegible writing, was so exciting, sometimes so profound, that I persuaded her to give an hour or two day after day to the unknown writer, and after some half-dozen such hours offered to spend what remained of life explaining and piecing together those scattered sentences. ‘No,’ was the answer, ‘we have come to give you metaphors for poetry.’
Introduction to “A Vision”

The picture on the left shows T. Werner Laurie's Prospectus for Subscribers for the 1925 version of A Vision. The 1937 version, published by Macmillan, and which is significantly different, had a print-run of 1,500.

This web site is dedicated to the work of the Irish poet W. B. Yeats (1865-1939), specifically to the strange, esoteric system which he and his wife, George, created, and which he expounded in A Vision. It is intended primarily for students of this work, and also for those who are interested in the intellectual and symbolic background to his later poetry and prose.

The Cydonian Imperative

The Crater Pyramid (CP) is located on the edge of a crater. To some, this proximity implies intelligent construction, since the energy released by the impact would very likely have toppled any nearby formations.

It's plausible the CP formed after the impact -- but if so, how?

In the original Viking image, the CP dominates the stark landscape and casts an elongated triangular shadow. Viewed in high-resolution, the CP appears less pyramidal and more conical. The sharp sides inferred from the Viking image are dull or nonexistent (as would be expected from natural formations and ancient artificial sites alike). Curiously, the prominent trailing shadow seems to be missing despite the low sun-angle.

The presence of possible alien artifacts on Mars is one of the most provocative enigmas ever confronted by science. This site explores this possibility from political, social and anthropological perspectives. While the Cydonian Imperative is necessarily an exercise in speculation, it is also an ideal format in which to explore the very real possibility of discovering extraterrestrial intelligence in the near future.

Urban Dharma - Buddhism in America

There are already many comprehensive books on Buddhism as a philosophy, and on the theoretical aspects of Buddhist meditation. If you are interested in that material we urge you to read those books. Many of them are excellent. This book is a 'How to.' It is written for those who actually want to meditate and especially for those who want to start now. There are very few qualified teachers of the Buddhist style of meditation in the United States of America. It is our intention to give you the basic data you need to get off to a flying start. Only those who follow the instructions given here can say whether we have succeeded or failed. Only those who actually meditate regularly and diligently can judge our effort. No book can possibly cover every problem that a meditator may run into. You will need to meet a qualified teacher eventually. In the mean time, however, these are the basic ground rules; a full understanding of these pages will take you a very long way.

Mindfulness In Plain English by Ven. Henepola Gunaratana (free eBook, English)

The goal of Urban Dharma is to offer original articles, essays and photos on Buddhism and archive related articles and essays by a variety of authors in a multi-yana way.

Urban Dharma - Buddhism in America (English)
This is a very large Buddhist religious site run out of Los Angeles by an American monk, Rev. Kusala, who was ordained in the Vietnamese Zen (Chan) tradition. The site is designed to introduce contemporary Buddhism to the public and as an informational source. Urban Dharma seeks to “be a resource for Americans interested in Buddhism, and to present the Buddha Dharma in a useful and understandable way.” Although many of the essays are intended to promote Buddhism and a Buddhist religious perspective, the site also includes English translations of important early South Asian documents.

Be a media astrologer to earn big bucks by The Economic Times. (English)
Astrology is a deep-rooted part of Indian culture. For years, planetary positions, times of birth and natal charts have been seen to determine our names, characteristics, marriages and paths in life. Although each family or community had its own set of astrologers, it was hardly considered a career option by most. Now, with television shows and books catering to our insecurities about the future, astrology is finding space in the mainstream.

The Big Bangs for Astronomers in 2005 by (English)
The past year in space science and astronomy was dominated by debate and some tantalizing near-findings.
A hangover of heady Mars discoveries festered while astronomers on the ground obtained evermore intimate glimpses of the outer solar system and the solar neighborhood but stopped short of declaring agreement on what they’d found.

The Religious and Other Beliefs of Americans 2005 by The Harris Poll. (English)
That very large majorities of the American public believe in God, miracles, the survival of the soul after death, heaven, the resurrection of Jesus Christ, and the Virgin birth will come as no great surprise. What may be more surprising is that significant minorities believe in ghosts, UFOs, witches, astrology, and in reincarnation – the belief that they were themselves reincarnated from other people. Six in ten believe in hell and the devil.

The Art of Mary Baxter St. Claire

We were wandering through the fairy woods when we came upon this wee sprite playing hide and seek with her shadow.

She paused to give us a mischievous wink and, just before disappearing with a pop, blew us a fairy's kiss. For a moment we could see nothing but a dazzling cloud of magical dream dust - (a common phenomenon with fairy kisses). This of course is to prevent people from seeing exactly where they went. Still there is no better luck you can have than to be sent a kiss from a fairy.

With this image we seek to send our fairy kisses to you!

Somewhere deep in the forest of out Enchanted Island there is a secret Wishing Pool. It's a mysterious and magical place that is hard to find because it shifts from place to place, never in the same spot twice. To find it you must be able to meet the requirements: a pure heart, a kind and gentle spirit (so you won't frighten away the fairies), a dream that is true and the courage to pursue it. Plus you must not fail to take with you those two most powerful companions indispensable for wishes to come true: they are of course "Faith" and "Hope".

Some say Mary Baxter St. Clair entered the world with a brush in her hand. Others remark that she paints with fairy dust ...

Freya’s Realm

The Alter is the place where we perform the majority of our magickal work. Pagans who do not like the idea of the word "Alter" also refer it to as the workspace. You can call it by any name you wish, it really doesn't matter.

Firstly, the Alter can be whatever you like. A small table, a chest as shown above (this picture is of my personal Alter), or even a large stone or tree stump if working outdoors. Even a cloth spread on the floor will do. I know this is how I began! It really doesn't matter what your Alter is, it is what we do with it that matters.

The Pagan Alter

Ritual plays an immense part in the spiritual life of a Witch.

It is a way for us to honour the divine Mother earth and Father Sun, and also for us to attune ourselves with the energies needed for Magickal workings.
Every Witch and Pagan will vary in the degree to which they use ritual. Some do not see Paganism as a religion at all, and therefore steer away from ritual altogether. This may come from being brought up in a strict religious way, and so they do not want to hark back to those oppressive days. The beauty of Paganism and Witchcraft is that there are no rules. Witches can still practice Magick without elaborate ritual, simply using what nature has provided us with, the elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

"In ancient times, plants were gods and goddesses; spirits and magicians lived within gnarled oaks and whispered from flowers.

Our ancestors discovered the forces present in plants and harnessed them to improve their lives.
Today the weeds and wildflowers that grace our cities and wildernesses, the ornamental and food plants in our gardens, even common house plants still possess incedible powers. Magickal herbalism is the use of these powers."

Westliches Feng Shui

Was ist westliches Feng Shui?

Out of this World: The Golden Age of the Celestial Atlas

Cellarius, Andreas. Harmonia macrocosmica. Amsterdam, 1661.

These maps capture some of the scale of the globes; if one of the planispheres were wrapped onto a sphere, it would produce a globe about 26 cm in diameter, or 2/3 the size of a typical Blaeu/Plancius globe. The style of Cellarius's maps seems to have been derived from the globes of Plancius and Blaeu. For example, Plancius had shown Cancer as a lobster, and Cellarius adopts the same convention; it is quite different from the Cancer of Bayer's Uranometria. In fact, Plancius had invented a new constellation, Cancer Minor, the little crab, and Cellarius included that also (see left), along with a number of other newly-coined Plancius constellations.

Burritt, Elijah. Atlas ... of the Heavens. New York, 1835

By 1830 the genre of star atlases began to split apart into two subdivisions, the professional star atlas, and the popular star atlas. Burritt's Atlas of the Heavens was a widely used example of the second class. Intended for the general public, it restored the constellation figures to their previous prominence. Only the brighter stars and nebulae were depicted on the charts. Since the atlas had to be priced reasonably, not a great deal of money went into design or engraving, although color was added at the end. The result was a reasonably attractive and useful book, appealing to amateurs, but probably not of much use to professional astronomers.

The illustration shows Ophiuchus and Hercules, head to head.

Out of this World: The Golden Age of the Celestial Atlas by The Linda Hall Library. The exhibition features forty-three star atlases and maps, covering the period from 1482 to 1851. They capture the sweeping grandeur of the heavens, and are among the most beautiful scientific books ever made.

Buddha In Glory

Center of all centers, core of cores,
almond self-enclosed, and growing sweet--
all this universe, to the furthest stars
all beyond them, is your flesh, your fruit.

Now you feel how nothing clings to you;
your vast shell reaches into endless space,
and there the rich, thick fluids rise and flow.
Illuminated in your infinite peace,

a billion stars go spinning through the night,
blazing high above your head.
But in you is the presence that
will be, when all the stars are dead.

by Rainer Maria Rilke
