Maitreya Project

Rudy Harderwijk made his very good website A View on Buddhism just for fun and to share some of the teachings that helped him along his path.
But he works also for this interesting project - The Maitreya Project.

The goal of the Maitreya Project is to bring the greatest possible benefit to as many as possible, for as long as possible. As its focus, Maitreya Project is building a magnificent 500ft / 152m bronze statue of Maitreya Buddha. Constructing the statue - because the essence of Maitreya Buddha is loving-kindness and peace - will provide a symbol to bless and transform the mind and heart of everyone in the world. The statue will be located at Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, in northern India close to the place of the historical Buddha's passing away. It will be constructed as a Buddhist cathedral for the public and will be designed to last at least 1,000 years so it can act as a catalyst for peace for a full millennium.

Who is Maitreya?
"Relying on certain Mahayana Buddhist citations and quotations, we believe that in this fortunate aeon one thousand Buddhas will appear. This is the time of the fourth Buddha, Buddha Shakyamuni, whose teaching is still existing, and the fifth Buddha will be Maitreya Buddha."
His Holiness the XIVth Dalai Lama

A View on Buddhism

"Don't try to use what you learn from Buddhism to be a Buddhist;
use it to be a better whatever-you-already-are."
His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama

This personal website is intended to share some information on the philosophy, practice and history of Buddhism that I found useful in giving my life a purpose and direction, in the hope it may benefit every visitor.
My own background lies mainly in the Tibetan tradition, but I hope the information in these pages is non-sectarian.
Are you new to Buddhism? Then it may be best to focus on the pages in the sections the Three Jewels, Philosophy, Problematic Emotions, Practice and Meditation on the left. These are set up like a 'What is Buddhism' course. In the beginning, it may be better to avoid clicking on too many links; these are mainly intended for a deeper level of study materials once you are a bit familiar with the basics.

If you have a little bit of experience and interest in (Buddhist) meditation, then the guided meditations in the Practice & Meditation Section, Problematic Emotions and History of Buddhism may be helpful.
The other pages on the left contain mainly extra information, like a glossary, stories and quotations, symbolism etc.

This essay aims to give a basic idea of what a dragon is. It is split into two main sections. The first deals with the problems of defining dragons, and traits common among dragons. The second section covers what dragons are not. Modern misconceptions about how dragons must be are listed. Also some creatures which share many traits with dragons, but are not dragons, are described.
